How do you know whether an environment works for neurodivergent people?

This diagnostic guide helps identify friction points in classrooms, workplaces, meetings, and communities. It is based on the Stimpunks Pattern Language and the Stimpunks Design Method.

How to Use This Diagnostic

For each section below, ask whether the environment supports the needs described. A single “no” does not mean failure — but repeated friction across categories often indicates a problem with environment fit.

Attention

Does the environment support sustained focus?

  • Can people work without constant interruption?
  • Are there quiet areas for deep attention?
  • Are meetings structured to protect focus?
  • Is multitasking minimized where possible?

Related patterns:

Sensory Environment

Does the environment respect sensory diversity?

  • Are lighting and noise levels adjustable?
  • Are quiet or low-stimulation areas available?
  • Can people control seating or workspace conditions?
  • Are sensory breaks normal and accepted?

Related patterns:

Energy

Does the environment respect the limits of human energy?

  • Are social demands bounded?
  • Is recovery time built into schedules?
  • Are breaks encouraged rather than discouraged?
  • Is burnout treated as a signal rather than a personal failure?

Related patterns:

Communication

Does the environment support multiple ways of participating?

  • Are written and asynchronous communication options available?
  • Are people allowed time to think before responding?
  • Are multiple participation styles respected?
  • Is silence treated as reflection rather than disengagement?

Participation

Does participation respect consent and autonomy?

  • Are people forced into interaction or participation?
  • Are alternative participation modes available?
  • Can people step back without penalty?

Environment Fit

If people consistently experience:

  • burnout
  • sensory overload
  • social exhaustion
  • constant masking

the issue may not be the people — it may be the environment.

This diagnostic helps identify where redesign may be needed.

When environments fit human diversity, people no longer need to fight their surroundings in order to participate.
