Stimpunks is a design framework for understanding neurodivergent life and redesigning environments around human diversity.

Many struggles that look personal are not random. They emerge from recurring patterns in how minds, nervous systems, environments, and institutions interact.

Stimpunks helps make those patterns visible — and then uses them to design better classrooms, workplaces, meetings, communities, and systems.

Recognize the experience. Name the pattern. Redesign the environment. Change the system.


The Core Idea

Neurodivergent struggles are often treated as individual problems. Stimpunks starts from a different premise: many of these struggles are signals that environments and systems were designed too narrowly.

Instead of asking, “What is wrong with this person?” Stimpunks asks:

  • What is this person experiencing?
  • What pattern explains it?
  • What in the environment is creating friction?
  • How can the environment be redesigned?
  • What larger system needs to change?

This is how Stimpunks works.

People often begin with an experience they cannot yet explain. Stimpunks identifies the patterns behind that experience, uses those patterns to shape design responses, applies those designs to real environments, and then asks what systems must change so those environments become possible.


1. Experience

People usually arrive through something they are living.

This is the recognition layer. It is the moment when someone thinks: this is not just me.


2. Pattern

Experiences repeat because they are shaped by recurring structures. Stimpunks documents those recurring structures as a pattern language for neurodivergent life.

This is the explanation layer. It shows that experiences are not isolated quirks. They have structure.

3. Recipe

Patterns become useful when they guide design. Stimpunks combines patterns into recipes for redesigning real situations.

This is the design layer. It answers the question: If these patterns are real, what should we do differently?

These recipes sit inside the broader Stimpunks Design Method and Design Language.


4. Environment

Recipes become real when they shape environments. Stimpunks explores what neurodivergent-friendly spaces actually look like in practice.

This is the implementation layer. It shows how better design changes classrooms, meetings, workplaces, and communities.

5. System

Environments do not exist in a vacuum. They are shaped by institutions, norms, incentives, and power. Stimpunks therefore moves beyond self-understanding and design into systems critique.

This is the structural layer. It asks not only how to support people better, but how to change the systems that keep producing harm.

The Neurodivergent Knowledge Forest

Stimpunks can be understood as a living ecosystem of ideas, patterns, and environments. Like a forest, it grows from underground networks of knowledge and spreads upward into the spaces where people live, learn, and work.

Together these layers form a living knowledge ecosystem: a rhizome of ideas, a mycelium of practices, and a forest of environments where neurodivergent life can flourish.


Stimpunks as an Operating System

Another way to understand the Stimpunks ecosystem is as a kind of operating system for neurodivergent life.

An operating system provides layers that help people interact with complex environments:

  • language for understanding what is happening
  • core mechanics that explain how systems behave
  • tools for acting on those insights
  • environments where those tools can be used
