In many environments the biggest barriers do not occur inside spaces but at the edges between them.
Transitions between focus and conversation, solitude and collaboration, rest and participation can produce sudden shifts in sensory load, social demand, and cognitive effort.

Most spatial design theory focuses on space. Deleuze and Guattari insist that assemblages are not only spatial but durational — they are organized as rhythms, sequences, and strings of moments that hold together into a life.

The Three Lines and the Five Zones
Deleuze and Guattari identify three types of line running through any assemblage:
- The molar line: rigid, segmented, the prescribed path — the curriculum, the agenda, the institutional demand
- The molecular line: supple, rhizomatic, the line of becoming — the undercurrent of desire, special interests, monotropic attention, what matters beneath the surface
- The line of abolition: the line that either opens a new beginning or dissolves the assemblage entirely — overwhelm, shutdown, burnout, or breakthrough
The five zones of Cavendish Space can be understood as designed environments for navigating these lines and the flow between them.
The Cave protects the molecular line. It is the zone where monotropic attention can follow its own trajectory without being constantly interrupted or collapsed back into the molar. Without the Cave, the molecular line goes underground — present but unlivable, like a secret soundtrack running beneath a life that cannot accommodate it.
The Campfire is the interface zone — where the molar and molecular lines can come into productive contact without one destroying the other. It supports structured exchange without demanding constant performance, holding the two lines in relationship rather than forcing a choice between them.
The Watering Hole is where the molecular line recovers and breathes. It is low-stakes, informal, lateral — the zone where lines of becoming can flow between people without the friction of institutional demand.
The Library is the zone that solves a problem Deleuze and Guattari identify but do not fully resolve: how assemblages get strung together into something coherent over time. They call this the string that links assemblages into a life and describe it as one of the most undertheorized aspects of assemblage thinking. The Library is Cavendish Space’s structural answer — accumulated collective memory that lets a community know what happened and orient toward what comes next. It prevents each moment of shared discovery from dissolving without trace.
The Habitat is the environmental condition that makes all line-flow possible at all. In lines-of-flight terms, a hostile Habitat doesn’t just disrupt the molar or molecular line — it activates the line of abolition as a baseline. Sensory overload, unpredictability, and masking pressure are all mechanisms by which the environment collapses the line of abolition inward on people before any learning or connection can begin. The Habitat is the layer that the lines-of-flight framework assumes but never names.
The Edges as Relay Switches
In his analysis of “Lines of Flight in the Classroom”, Ian Buchanan concludes that the crucial work of teaching is identifying:
“The relay switches that enable teachers to branch between these lines.”

In the lines-of-flight framework, every transition between lines involves a calculation: what is the second last? — the right moment to shift before the limit becomes a threshold and the threshold triggers the line of abolition. Deleuze and Guattari describe this as an economics of everyday life — the ongoing assessment of how much of any given assemblage can be sustained before a change becomes necessary.

In lines-of-flight terms, they function as social signals about which line a person is currently on — how much capacity exists for connection, how close a threshold is, whether the molecular line is open or the line of abolition is near. They externalize the ongoing calculation that would otherwise require either constant verbal renegotiation or complete invisibility.

The Stimpunks Inversion
The lines-of-flight framework, as applied to classrooms, places the teacher at the center: the teacher manages the relay switches between lines on behalf of the room. Someone decides when the molar line has gone on too long, when play is needed, when things are tipping toward chaos.
Cavendish Space inverts this structurally.
The Library holds the stringing-together, so no single person carries it. The Habitat lowers the baseline cost of presence so the line of abolition is not the default starting position. The Edges are designed so transitions don’t consume overwhelming processing time and social energy. Lily pads distribute the limit/threshold calibration across many small moments. Interaction badges externalize each person’s real-time state.
The result: each person holds their own relay switches.
This is what self-determination looks like as environmental design — not the absence of structure, but structure redesigned around the question of who operates the switches.
The Origin Worth Naming
Fernand Deligny, the French psychiatrist from whose work Deleuze and Guattari drew the concept of lines of flight, developed his thinking by following autistic children around a large campsite. Their wandering — purposeful but not goal-directed, meaningful but illegible to outside observers — was what he called lignes d’erre: errant lines, wandering lines.
Non-purposive, but not aimless. They got something out of it, but nobody could figure out what. It had no destination, but the doing of it mattered.
This is the genealogy of lines of flight. The philosophical framework for understanding desire, flow, and becoming in human life was built from observing neurodivergent movement that neuronormative observers could not decode.
Cavendish Space is, among other things, an environment designed to let those lines be followed — legibly, safely, and without requiring translation into forms that others can evaluate as purposeful.
The errant lines were always signal. Cavendish Space builds the conditions in which they are recognized as such.
Alignments Between Cavendish Space and Desire Lines
A desire line (also called a desire path or cow path) is the informal path people create by actually walking — the diagonal worn across a lawn, the shortcut through a hedge, the trail that appears wherever a designed route fails to match how people actually want to move. Desire lines are spatial evidence of the gap between prescribed behavior and actual human desire.

Paving the Cowpaths
The classic desire-line design principle: leave the ground unpaved, observe the paths that emerge, then build for them. Some institutions do the opposite — pave everything first, fence off the rest, then treat the worn patches as violations.
Conventional institutional design for neurodivergent people is almost entirely the second model. Prescribe the behavior. Penalize the deviation. Treat the workarounds as symptoms of the person rather than signals from the environment.

The Edges as Unaccommodated Desire Lines
When an environment isn’t designed for neurodivergent people, they create workarounds: sitting in hallways, finding corners, avoiding certain rooms, developing personal rituals to manage transitions. These are desire lines made visible — evidence of the gap between what the space was designed to do and what people actually need it to do.
The Edges section of Cavendish Space is a direct design response to this accumulation. Rather than treating transition workarounds as failures of the person, it names the transitions as the actual design problem and builds for where the desire lines concentrate.
