Shared-Signal Space: The mode of connection carried by signal rather than proximity — a voice note, a thread, a call left open in the background, a message typed and read across distance. For many Autistic, ADHD, and otherwise neurodivergent people, this is where regulation, access, and honest connection come easiest, away from masking and sensory overload. Not a substitute for shared-air space — a mode in its own right.

Shared-signal space is real too — not a fallback to shared-air space, not a simulation of connection, but a daily, ordinary way of living alongside each other. It has its own texture: a voice note left for later, a thread picked up mid-thought, a call kept open in the background while two people just exist near each other. Connection here spreads sideways rather than up a ladder — the Autistic Rhizome, with no single origin and no correct path — and online spaces become watering holes: loose, come-and-go places where presence alone sustains connection and every form of communication counts.

What crosses the signal is more than information. Voice carries breath — the pace of a sentence, the pause before a hard word, the exhale under a laugh — the same regulating cues a nervous system reads in a shared room. And where there is no voice, there is still connection. For many Autistic people the written word is the clearer channel, not a lesser one; phone calls rank last among communication preferences while written channels rank highest, valued for thinking time, structure, fewer sensory demands, and a record to return to (Howard & Sedgewick, 2021). AAC — a symbol board, a letterboard, a text-to-speech app — is real communication in its own right, not a workaround bolted onto it. What the written channel hands you is time: room for the whole thought to make it out, at the pace a mind actually needs.

Regulation Travels

Polyvagal (Porges, 2011) and co-regulation research extend to voice and video. Vocal prosody — tone, pace, the breath audible in the voice itself — carries neuroception, the cueing of safety or threat below conscious awareness, and a nervous system responds to it even without shared physical air. That is not a metaphor. It is audible breath, literally, carried by signal. Direct measurement bears this out, with a caveat worth keeping: physiological synchrony shows up across face-to-face, video, and virtual-reality contact alike — real in every condition, though thinner over a screen than in a shared room (Streuber et al., 2026). The signal carries something. Distance thins it. Both are true.

The double empathy problem (Milton, 2012) reminds us that connection is built between people, not owned by either one — and the same holds for medium. No channel is the master channel: not voice, not video, not text. Connection is built in whatever medium lets both people breathe.

Signals travel, and connect us with one another — not in spite of the distance, but through it.

What Text Carries

Not every real connection needs a voice at all.

For many Autistic people, the written word isn’t a fallback from speech — it’s the clearer channel. Text removes the real-time pressure of a live exchange: no expectation of an instant reply, no tone to decode as it happens, no face to read while also hunting for words. A message can be drafted, revised, reread before it’s sent, so what arrives is closer to what was actually meant.

This isn’t a workaround the mainstream handed down. Neurodivergent people didn’t wait for the world to make room for them — they built the text-based infrastructure the rest of us now live inside, because they needed an alternative to face-to-face contact and made one. For a lot of us, written communication is the great equalizer: a channel where the thought arrives intact, where a computer is less a gadget than a prosthetic for connection.

In the largest survey yet of autistic adults’ own communication preferences, phone calls ranked last, again and again, across almost every scenario — while written channels, text, email, instant messaging, ranked among the most preferred, especially with anyone unfamiliar. Participants named four consistent reasons: thinking time, structure, fewer sensory demands, and a record to return to (Howard & Sedgewick, 2021).

Not a lesser stand-in for talking. For many, it’s the version that finally lets the actual thought through.

This includes AAC. Symbol boards, letterboards, text-to-speech apps — these route through the same channel as a typed message, not the same channel as a spoken one. For non-speaking and minimally speaking Autistic people, this isn’t a workaround bolted onto “real” communication. It is the real communication, built to carry the same precision and thinking time that written language gives everyone else.

The Gift of Time

What the written channel actually hands you is time.

Processing time is the interval a mind needs to take in information, sort sensory input, regulate, and shape a response. It is not a flaw or a lag. It is a real cognitive rhythm — and for many Autistic people the thinking isn’t slower so much as deeper, more layered, more deliberate. A fast room only sees the pause. It never sees the work happening inside it.

Asynchronous communication is built around that rhythm instead of against it. You’re expected to be there at some point, not this instant. A message can be drafted, revised, reread before it’s sent. Real-time talk rewards whoever can speak fluently on demand; async hands the same participation to people who need to compose first — no time-zone luck, no penalty for arriving later with the better answer.

Not a slower way to connect. A truer one — the pace at which the whole thought finally makes it out.

The Rhizome, Not the Hierarchy

Shared-signal space doesn’t have one shape. It rhizomes.

Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari (1987), the Autistic Rhizome describes connection that spreads sideways and underground, with no single origin and no correct path — the opposite of a ladder to climb. A Discord server that’s alive at 2am. A thread reopened after three years, as if no time passed. A reply to a stranger’s post that quietly becomes a friendship. None of it needs a hierarchy to be real.

Within the rhizome, online spaces work as watering holes: loosely held, come-and-go places where presence alone can sustain connection, and every form of communication counts (Edgar, 2026). Stimpunks builds these spaces on purpose — designed so that serendipity is possible and safety is built in, not left to luck. You don’t have to perform belonging to have it. Lurking counts. One reply after months of silence counts.

Not a consolation prize for people who can’t manage the room. For many Autistic people, online community is where asynchronous engagement, sensory control, and self-paced participation make belonging possible at all (Edgar, 2026).

The Stack

A signal life isn’t one channel. It’s a stack.

Stimpunks describes a communication stack that runs across three speeds — real-time, asynchronous, and stored — and three kinds of space: caves for deep solo focus, campfires for the group gathered to talk, watering holes for loose, come-and-go public presence. A live call is real-time. A thread is async. A published page is storage you can return to years later.

No tier sits above the others. You reach for the speed and the space that fit the moment and the people in it. The stack is the argument: connection was never one mode wearing a crown. It was always a range.

The Science, Briefly

Polyvagal theory (Porges, 2011) describes how tone, pitch, and pacing of a voice — “neuroception” — cue safety or threat below conscious awareness. That cueing doesn’t stop at the edge of a screen.

Direct measurement backs this up, with a caveat worth keeping. A study comparing heart-rate-variability synchrony across face-to-face, video-call, and virtual-reality collaboration found real synchrony in every condition — but weaker over video than in person (Streuber et al., 2026). The signal carries something. Distance thins it. Both are true.

Not identical to shared-air space. Not absent, either. A thinner channel is still a channel — the rhythm still crosses it, weakened but real. For many Autistic and Disabled people, that thinner, signal-carried channel is still where regulation, access, and honest connection come easiest, away from masking and sensory overload.

Built for Two, Not for One

The double empathy problem (Milton, 2012) reframes connection as something built between people, not owned by either one. Understanding fails or succeeds in the relation, not in one person’s “correct” way of communicating.

Extend that past communication style to medium, and the same logic holds: no channel is the master channel — not voice, not video, not text. Connection is built in whatever medium lets both people actually be understood.

The Texture of a Signal Life

It doesn’t look like the room. It looks like:

A voice note left for later, played back twice. A thread picked up mid-thought, days later, as if no time passed. A call kept open in the background while two people just exist near each other, saying nothing for an hour. A message drafted, reread, and rewritten twice before it’s sent — because getting the words right matters more than getting them out fast. A Discord channel that’s quiet for weeks and then full again, with no one owing anyone an explanation. A reply typed slowly, word by word, through a symbol board or a letterboard — no less a voice for taking longer to arrive.

Ordinary. Daily. Not a simulation of closeness — a form of it.

No Mode Sits at the Top

Shared-air space: the room, the breath, the nervous systems settling into rhythm face to face.

Shared-signal space: the voice, the pace, the same rhythm carried on a signal instead of on air — or the written word, carrying thought instead of breath.

Two real modes. One argument.
